Independent Winter Trek in Ladakh

Hi, May I know if there is any trek that is doable in Winter apart from Chadar trek? Understand most passes would be snowed in. Are there any more scenic trek that is possible to do independently (relatively safely) while staying at homestay along the way? Thanks!

I've never trekked in Ladakh

I've never trekked in Ladakh during the winter personally.  So all I can do is speculate a bit on treks that would not have passes and have home stays, and should be accessible.  The Sham Valley, often called the "Baby Trek" would be accessible year round.  That might be the only one I would consider "safe" without a tent in the winter.  You should be able to hike up the Markha Valley as an out an back (not going up to Nimaling and over the pass) from Chilling but you had better ask in Leh to make sure that people are still in the villages, I would expect they would be.  You should have very good cold weather gear and a good sleeping bag if you try this at a minimum.  Another option might be to do some hiking Zanskar, the road from Leh to Padum via Kargil is probably open year round I think that is how people who do the Chadar trek get back to Leh.  In which case it should be possible to trek to Phukal Gompa.  Just a few ideas to look into and inquire about locally.  As I said I don't have any first hand knowledge of winter trekking in Ladakh, but I would think it could be done, you will need good gear, you don't what to get stuck out in bad weather in the winter and not be able to to survive.  If you end up giving it a try let me know how it went.cheers, Micah

Hi Micah, May I know if you

Hi Micah, May I know if you have been in the area in late March to Early April? Its very probable that I am heading back in a week's time :D Probably doing the 2 areas you mentioned, sham valley, hiking up markha and back from chilling + exploring some reachable village with the public transport. Any more recommendation for that period? Thanks! Regards,Royden
